The Technical Associate works closely with Principal Investigators, Research Scientists, Post-Doctoral Associates, Graduate Students, and external collaborators on ongoing research studies involving both data collection of existing tests and the evaluation of new tests. S/he is responsible for a variety of technical, training and administrative assistance activities supporting the research team through all phases of the project. Will support research activities related to progress in computing. This is a one-year research appointment position, funded for one year. Extension beyond that is subject to renewed funding and performance.

The position is appointed at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory, with a secondary appointment at the Sloan School of Management's Initiative on the Digital Economy. Most of what we know about how AI capabilities scale comes from language and vision models trained on abundant internet data. Robotics is different. Training data has to be physically generated, and there is no agreed way to measure how hard a manipulation task is that maps onto the categories used to describe human work, or how much of the economy a given capability covers. Our robotics work asks how fast physical AI is actually improving, what limits that rate, and what the answer implies for which work can be automated and when. In this role you will own the experimental and data infrastructure behind this research. You will design and run machine learning experiments, build the evaluation pipelines that make results comparable across tasks and models, assemble and maintain the datasets the work depends on, and contribute to the resulting papers and public writing. You will lead at least one experimental project end to end. The role will also have access to the CSAIL Living Lab, a dedicated robotics research environment designed to approximate a real home, including a kitchen, where robots can be trained and evaluated on autonomous tasks and interaction with people.
