Joseph Emmens is a Postdoctoral Associate at MIT FutureTech. His research combines theory, text analysis, and causal inference to study how teams, firms, and institutions produce scientific and technological innovations. He examines the role of AI and automation in science, focusing on how advances in AI capabilities may shape the future direction of technological progress.
His recent work develops a framework for modelling collaboration using patent and paper texts. This approach reveals the division of labour within teams and shows how new knowledge fields emerge from breakthroughs. More broadly, his research sheds light on the dynamics of innovation, offering insights for policy, R&D management, and the organisation of science.
Before joining FutureTech, Joseph earned his PhD in Economics from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Barcelona School of Economics.
